The cranes next stop was the Crestwood School in St. Louis. It went to the 4th grade class of Mrs. Papin who was very excited to have it there. Before the cranes got to St. Louis Mr. Ross contacted the Charles and Anne Lindbergh Foundation. They are a great source if you want to learn more about the Lindberghs. Mr Ross wanted to know if there were any relatives of Harold Bixby still in St. Louis. Mr.Bixby was the banker who came up with the name Spirit of St. Louis. The Lindbergh Foundation was real helpful and it turns out one of Mr. Bixby's nieces, Mrs. Lucy Bertelson, lived there. She arranged for her cousin, Mr. Bates Childress, to go to the school and speak to the students. The Crestwood School is part of the Lindbergh School District. By coincidence Reeve Lindbergh, daughter of Charles Lindbergh, was speaking at the school district the same week that the cranes were there. A few connections were made and Mrs. Papin, Mrs. Bertelson and Mr. Childress were all meeting and inspecting the contents of the suitcase carrying the cranes. Mr. Childress and Mrs. Bertelson added some interesting stories about their family and Mrs. Lindbergh wrote in the log book in the suitcase. When Mr. Childress wrote, he opened his letter with, "I want to thank you for providing me with a wonderful opportunity." Follow this link:Off to Long Island New York!!
