The Economic Developer of Skowhegan, Maine By: Nick Adams
I have been studying the Skowhegan town government and specifically the job of Jeff Hewett, who is an economic and community developer. The office of Economic and Community Development features Jeff Hewett as the director, and Trisha Austin the secretary . The Community Development Advisory Board features Karol Youney, the Chairman, Joy Mase the vice chairmen, and Evalyn Bowman. The Promotional Board features Becky Dionne, a Downtown Business Association member, Evalyn Bowman, a selectmen representative, and Patricia Dickey, town manager. You better believe all the info I'm going to tell you because I have talked to the people who know. You think you know all the info about Skowhegan? Well did you know that Skowhegan has a paper company, three shoe factories, one fabric factory, four mini malls, three outlets, three clothing outlets, twelve restaurants, five diners and three fast food restaurants ??! ! Did you know that Sappi is the largest taxpayer in town? The town is worth $902,456,600.00!! (Wow) . This is the Interview with Jeff Hewett- What does an economic and community development director do? He works with businesses to find ways to make it more profitable to hire workers and give them better wages. What businesses do you work with? He works with all businesses like, Kens Bowling Family Bowling Center, Skowhegan 201 Car Repair, Canadian Chains, North East Doran Metal Fabricator and Richard Carrier Trucking. He made it possible for them to have a 10,000 Sq Ft building constructed!! And he also was instrumental in getting an 18,000 Sq Ft building for Dirigo Stitching. What do you like and dislike about your job? Likes- The fact that it is different every day... not the same thing over and over. Every day is different, working with the businesses. Dislikes- not having enough time with the businesses. He must fit in lots of work in so little time. He works with the State of Maine. He can give loans up to 5,000. They are able to tear down buildings can also renovate old buildings. These are my discoveries and my interview with Jeff Hewett. Did you like it? |
