Captain Dearborn was part of Benedict Arnold's march to Quebec. He wrote a day by day journal of his journey. The following are notes from his journal. The book, Arnold's March To Quebec by Kenneth Robert's is the primary source that we read from.
**** "I got to the mouth of the Kennebec on the 20th and entered at ten o'clock a.m." **** "On The 22nd, we passed Pownalborough and found a courthouse and goal and some really good settlements. A few days later some men got into a fight from my company and one of the men were was shot and died". **** "October 4th..... We finally reached Norridgewock. there were two or three families settled there and there were some ruins of an old Indian town. There was also a fort and chapel". **** October 23rd..... "Some of my men got separated and we found them with their bateaux turned over. There was a large quantity of clothing, guns and provisions lost. I sent 26 sick men to smalls falls where a doctor could take care of them". **** October 30th....." I don't feel good at all". **** November 1st..... "Captain Goodrich's company killed my dog and another and ate them. I am still not feeling good". **** November 3rd..... We found Colonel Arnold. Arnold found 22 Indians to help him for $40 a month. I "took a puke" that night". **** November 15th..... "There was a rumor that there was a troop heading towards our camp from the garrison,. We went to meet them but it was a false alarm". **** November 16th..... "Montreal surrendered to General Montgomery. They took a number of the enemy's ships". **** November 30th..... "Captain Duggan arrived from Montreal with provisions and ammunition". **** December 1st..... "General Montgomery arrived today at 10:00 o' clock a.m. with three armed schooners, men, artillery, ammo, and provisions including clothes". **** December 9th..... "I am still sick. I have an extremely high fever and I'm too weak to walk. I almost died. My company got possession of Quebec city while I was sick". **** December 10th..... "I am back in action. My camp was heavily attacked this day. None of my men got hurt, just one woman that got shot with a twenty-four pound cannon ball and died". **** December 13+14....." Several men were injured and killed because of the battle" **** December 25th..... "Arnold and his company are leaving to battle with Quebec. My company and i are leaving to take out the Walls Of Quebec. The Storm is going to help us" **** December 27th.....My company and i were sent to attack The Walls Of Quebec, but were sent back before the storm is clearing. **** December 31st..... "My company and I were sent back to battle. We met up with Arnold and he was wounded. Arnold told me to keep going and retake the town. I got separated from my men and was captured by the enemy". **** January 14th..... "I broke out with small pox". **** January 15th-18th..... "General Washington and his army attempted to invade Boston and lost 4,000 men. General Lee, marching to New York with 3000 men but lost all but 300". **** May 6th....." I'm still held captive. There is a rumor that 15,000 men are coming to attack Quebec City". **** May 16th..... "I finally am going home." **** June 27th..... "After these days I am finally home". |
