Mollie Pillsbury and Kayla Withee met with Eleanor Walker at a local nursing home and gathered this story. Eleanor is in her 80's and enjoyed sharing stories with Mollie and Kayla.
One day, Eleanor Walker and her brothers and sisters went sliding in her back yard in Madison, Maine. The large back yard ended a quarter of a mile away from the home. They were all out with a brand new sled, that had nice sharp runners on it. She was having a great time going up and down the hill. She was especially having a fun time going over the small bumps on the hill; she loved to fly through the air. She was having such a great time that she really did not want to leave. On the last run of the day, she got on the wooden sled and was shaking with enjoyment. She picked the run with the most bumps and let herself go. Eleanor started to speed up and go over bumps going higher each time. The bump in front of her was huge! She closed her eyes and took one deep breath, here goes... she flew through the air and started to tumble on the ground. She suddenly felt a sharp pain in her neck and saw red snow around her. Eleanor's father showed up and brought her home on an old oxen wagon. She had gotten a huge gash in her head and was still bleeding. She never once went to the hospital and she very proudly shows me that there is not a scar to be seen on her head. |
