Saturday Night Dances in Shamut, Maine

You would never find Beverly Mayo at home on Saturday nights, if you wanted to find her you would have to go to the school in Shawmut. To get her attention, though, wouldn't be easy. She would be moving softly on her feet to the music while the band was playing. Never would she be sitting down taking a break.

Beverly is now sixty-seven years old and when she was younger, Beverly and her family would go dancing on Saturday nights. She always enjoyed going to dances.

"By the end of the week, I couldn't wait for a break, I was ready to get out and have a good time," she told me. "It was pretty popular in our little town because there wasn't anything else to do, most of the time. There was always a good turn out. People from other towns came too, but most of them were from Shamut." You could always find her family there.

"My favorite dance was the "Lady of the Lake," I liked it so much because there's a lot of moving and swinging around. It was the most fun of them all. when I got tired, I would take a seat and watch the others. I don't think we sat out much though, we pretty much danced to everything," she replied.

There were many different kinds of dances, the waltzes and the fox trot being a couple of them. The girls wore regular skirts, they were neat but not too fancy. A band always provided the music.

"My mother was the best dancer. Boy would she swing the men right off their feet. She was really rugged and moved swiftly. I guess that's why I thought she was so good, " Beverly said.

The dances usually began around 7:00 and ended at 12:00 pm which made for a pretty late night."

"A good time was had by all," she said.

Everyone's feet were sore by the time it ended, but when they got home they slept like a baby, especially Beverly!
