Prmary Source note examined by Annie Sumberg on Nov. 4th 2001

A small piece of paper that read "1775 J.B. Dunkirk with Arnold" was found in an apple log at the machine shop of Sprague's cotton mill in Augusta, Maine. It was a pine plug. The pine plug was put into a hole in a tree. The tree grew around it. It was 8 inches from the bark and was found in 1867. The tree had 90 rings from the plug to the bark. Each ring equals one year, so this man, J.B. Dunkirk just wanted to let people know that he had accompanied Benedict Arnold on the expedition to Quebec.
