Martha Washington was born on June 2, 1731. When she first got married she was seventeen. She had four children, two of them died young. Her first husband died in 1757. He was Dan Cusist.

Two years later Martha met George Washington. No one knows where she met George, but in January 6 of 1759 she married George Washington. They moved to Mt. Vernon. Then Martha became First Lady when George became president. He used to call her Patsy. She did not enjoy being first lady at all. While being first lady she held a reception every Friday at the church. She also organized a women's sewing circle and mended clothes. Martha traveled in the Revolutionary War to help to share the hardships. In 1780 she went to New Jersey with George in camp at Morristown N.J. When they left Martha's husband got ill. After George died, Martha burned all the letters that he wrote her. In 1802 Martha Cusist Washington died. Martha will always be remembered as America's first First Lady
