Back in colonial times a blacksmith or maybe a copper or a cobbler would take a boy of the ages of 12 or 13 to be his 'Apprentice'. An apprentice is a young boy who learns the craftsmanship of a certain trade. This most likely would be the trade that he would like to be doing when he is older. So someday when the person who trained him died, the boy that was his apprentice would take over that trade. The boy would already know how to make an ax head or a barrel or whatever his trade was. Apprentices were very important in colonial towns.
